Located in the heart of the Kullu Valley in Himachal Pradesh, Bijli Mahadev is a spiritual paradise surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Located at a height of almost 2,460 metres above sea level, Lord Shiva, the Hindu deity of destruction and regeneration, is honoured at this ancient temple.
The name “Bijli Mahadev” means “Lord of Lightning,” which is an appropriate title given the breathtaking natural phenomenon that can be seen here.
According to legend, the temple’s name comes from a supernatural event in which lightning struck the Shiva Linga, a representation of Lord Shiva that is placed inside the temple’s sanctorum. Local legend holds that during thunderstorms, the Shiva Linga is struck by lightning and breaks into pieces. However, the priests are able to miraculously put it back together by using butter and sattoo, a mixture of sugar and roasted gram flour.
Beyond its legendary significance, pilgrims and devotees who make the difficult trek in search of blessings and divine favour find great spiritual significance in Bijli Mahadev. Encircled by thick forests, lush valleys, and snow-capped peaks, the temple welcomes guests to immerse themselves in meditation and prayer amidst the magnificence of nature. It provides a peaceful escape from the busyness of everyday life.

Legend of Bijli Mahadev
Attached with mysticism and mythology, the legend of Bijli Mahadev resonates with the essence of celestial marvels and divine intervention. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, and is highly regarded by followers. According to a legend, the temple has a Shiva Lingam, a famous symbol of Lord Shiva’s heavenly energy, which was reportedly struck by lightning and given the name “Bijli Mahadev,” or “Lord of Lightning.” It is reported that this breathtaking occurrence happens on a regular basis, strengthening the temple’s holy atmosphere and spiritual importance.

Journey to Bijli Mahadev
I got into my car at 9:45 from Kullu and headed to Bijli Mahadev, excited to discover the mysterious charm of this holy place surrounded by the towering Himalayas. The drive proved to be quite the adventure as I made my way through the curving roads, with uneven ground causing my car to bounce over the rough path. Rich apple trees towered on either side of the road their branches packed with the promise of a great fruit.
By 11:00, I parked my car in the charming village of Chansari and was getting ready for the walk ahead, making sure I had enough food to last me the whole way. I walked onto the route with a sense of excitement in my heart and saw a set of stone steps leading to the holy temple of Bijli Mahadev. It was a difficult climb, with each step an indication of the rough ground that awaited.
Even though the climb was difficult, the panoramic views of Kullu city below gave me a sense of breathtaking power that inspired me to continue. The sun was beating down on me as I climbed higher, so I had to stop often to refuel and catch my breath.
Every time I stopped, I was in awe of the amazing view that was spreading out in front of me—a panorama of undulating hills and lush valleys that went on forever.
The never-ending stairs eventually gave way to a straight track, providing a little relief from the uphill struggle after what felt like an eternity. The relief, however, was temporary, for the climb began again, the stone stairs shaping away at the rocky ground.
I kept going even though I was getting tired because I was motivated by the assurance of the shrine that was waiting for me at the top.
When the sun rose to its highest point, I was relieved to see a thick jungle canopy shielding me from the intense heat. I took cover behind the massive trees and felt the cool embrace of the forest, with the sound of rustling leaves providing a calming tune that comforted my tired spirit. I pushed forward with fresh energy, my footsteps resonating across the peaceful surroundings.
After what seemed like a lifetime, the scenery changed again, revealing a huge open space mixed with improvised tents that provided travellers with refreshments. Taking a moment to collect my breath, I observed the busy environment where the soft sound of the breeze blended with the animated conversations of other travellers.
I set out again with a newfound resolve, the Bijli Mahadev temple getting closer with every step. I felt a wave of reverence as I got closer to the holy location, the old stone building serving as a reminder of years of prayer and faith. As I ascended the last stairs and stepped upon the temple’s sacred grounds, a deep sensation of calm and tranquilly filled my heart.

Exploring the Temple
I saw a stone route heading to the main compound as soon as I passed past the gate. The pathway itself, made of durable stones that have lasted the test of time, was a tribute to the skill of the ancient builders. I was covered by the calm atmosphere of the mountains as I walked along that trail, and the sounds of nature calmed my senses.
As I proceeded closer to the main complex, I sew the reverently placed Shiva lingam across from the temple, as well as the magnificent statue of Nandi, the godly bull and Lord Shiva’s vahana (vehicle). Nandi’s presence invites worshippers to enter the hallowed area with humility and reverence as it represents protection and auspiciousness.
I took off my shoes and placed my stuff in the proper spot before entering the temple’s inner sanctum. I entered the holy place with a sense of cleanliness and dedication, washed my hands and feet, and prayed, asking the divine deity for blessings.
With the soft glow of candles lighting the holy area and the scent of incense hanging in the air, the atmosphere inside the temple was calm and pleasant. Here, among the old walls echoing with devotees’ prayers, one experiences a profound sense of peace covering the spirit and a strong sense of connection to the holy.
I prayed and lighted the incense that I had bought from one of the shopkeepers who had set up tents close to the temple complex. Then I just sat there and breathed in the beautiful ambiance. I walked outside the temple and paid my respects to the precious Shiva lingam outside the main shrine and to the divine bull, Nandi.
I felt a sense of thankfulness and devotion for every step I took as I became fully enveloped in the spiritual aura that surrounded the area. I experienced a strong connection to Lord Shiva’s heavenly presence with each offering and prayer, and his blessings were felt across the entire sacred area.
Photography or videography was prohibited inside the temple but visitors were video calling their known ones.

Scenic Beauty And Surrounding Landscapes
Bijli Mahadev, surrounded by expansive views of the beautiful Himalayas, provides soul-stirring views of the surrounding environment. My eyes were met by an expansive panorama of lush forests, snow-capped peaks, and beautiful valleys as I stepped from the temple complex. The scent of pine trees penetrated the chilly mountain air, heightening the ethereal beauty of the scene.
As I moved farther into the surrounding area, I noticed a lovely trishul outside the Bijli Mahadev temple complex, towering tall. Both pilgrims and tourists gathered nearby, attempting to capture with their cameras the spirit of this holy symbol. The trishul, a powerful representation of Lord Shiva’s heavenly power, captivated spectators with its majestic presence and flawless design.
I sat in a quiet area of the open space that surrounded Bijli Mahadev and enjoyed the peace of the moment while allowing the soft touch of the mountain breeze to caress me. I had a panoramic view of the far-off snow-capped peaks from this position, and their flawless beauty captivated me with its ethereal charm. I saw some horses grazing in the middle of the lush field, their elegant motions adding to the melodious sound of the natural world.
The gentle sway of the grass and the far-off sounds of the mountain breeze provided a beautiful background for my meditation as I lost myself in the peacefulness of the surroundings. These elements served as a constant reminder of the Himalayas’ ageless grandeur and the unbreakable connection between humans and the nature.

My Trekking Experience
Trekking to Bijli Mahadev was an adventure that required both mental and physical endurance. There were numerous obstacles and rewards throughout the trail, which was bordered by lush forests and rugged terrain. With every step I took up the rocky road, I got closer to the ancient temple situated on top of the hill, its mystical charm luring me in.
The journey developed like a natural symphony, with every component contributing a distinct tune. My journey was accompanied by the soothing sounds of rustling leaves, chirping birds, and mountain Breeze, which gave me a sense of calm and peace.
I had a strong sense of connection with the ground and the sky among the lush surroundings, as if the mountains were directing me in the right direction.
I was put to the test both mentally and physically as I made my way through the narrow paths and sharp incline, but every obstacle I faced made me stronger. I pushed myself to the most on every climb, finding strength in the stunning beauty all around me.
And when I saw Bijli Mahadev’s majestic image against the Himalayan backdrop upon reaching the summit, I was struck with a deep sense of amazement and awe.
The journey to Bijli Mahadev was not only physical but also spiritual, leaving a lasting impression on my soul. It served as a reminder of the human spirit’s resilience and the transformational force of nature, bearing witness to the enduring relationship between humans and mountains.
I also realised that this was a voyage I would treasure for the rest of my life as I descended from the summit with a heart full of appreciation and reverence.
